Many states offer a pathway in law for the designation of schools as a "STEM schools" or "STEAM schools." Across states, the rules and reference materials vary significantly. On a close reading, however, many similar themes emerge. Below, the STEMx network has collected links to the policies and procedures for STEM designation across three states. Building off the knowledge of our members, we're glad to share this collection with advocates and researchers.
Ohio schools may apply to be designated either STEM or STEAM by the Ohio STEM Committee, managed by the Ohio Department of Education. The Ohio STEM Learning Network provides technical assistance to the Ohio STEM Committee and makes recommendations on designation applications.
A school that receives Tennessee STEM and STE(A)M School Designation will be recognized by the Tennessee Department of Education for its use of STEM or STE(A)M teaching and learning strategies and serve as a model from which other schools may visit and learn. All K–12 schools serving students in Tennessee are eligible.
The Indiana Department of Education’s STEM Certified Schools program prioritizes the teaching of science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines – critical to preparing students for 21st Century success. STEM Certified Schools exemplify a highly non-traditional approach to education by employing a great deal of inquiry, project-based learning, community engagement, entrepreneurship, student-centered classrooms, and out-of-school STEM activities.
